Named the 2023 Young Australian of the Year, this Socceroo built a professional career that started at Adelaide United before a long stint with FC Midtjylland in Denmark, including Champions League football, and further seasons with clubs in Portugal, Turkey, Spain, Czechia and Switzerland. A Socceroos debut goal against Kuwait in 2018 preceded a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, after his penalty in the qualifying shootout against Peru helped the side reach the tournament. Off the field, Awer Mabil co-founded Barefoot to Boots, a non-profit working on health, education and gender equality for refugees. His work combines international football with refugee advocacy.
