Ben Matthews

Ben Matthews is a Perth pianist, composer and bandleader with a strong interest in improvisation. His solo playing brings jazz, classical music and contemporary film and game scores into one quiet, reflective sound. Influences include Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Hiromi Uehara, alongside Ravel, Chopin and Ryuichi Sakamoto, plus composers Hans Zimmer, Nobuo Uematsu and Joe Hisaishi. Ben has held residencies at Perth performance venues, worked with Australian musicians as both a sideman and bandleader, and received a WAM Award nomination. His solo piano format is suited to rooms where the music should reward close listening without overpowering conversation.
