James Magnussen, known as The Missile, anchored the Australian men's 4x100m freestyle relay team to gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The following year brought the 100m freestyle title at the 2011 Australian Swimming Championships. Shanghai hosted the 2011 FINA World Championships next, where Magnussen took gold in the 100m freestyle, the first Australian man to win that event since the championships began in 1973. The same Shanghai meet saw Magnussen lead the 4x100m freestyle relay team to gold with an opening split of 47.49 seconds, and anchor the 4x100m medley relay to silver.
