Kuma Kaaru

Kuma Kaaru means One Blood in Kaurna. It's an Aboriginal-owned cultural performance group based on Kaurna Yarta, founded in 2008 by Jack Kanya Kudnuitya Buckskin, and the work it does joins land, spirit, sea and skies through traditional dance, storytelling and ceremony. A booking can take several shapes. There's a Welcome to Country, there's a Smoking Ceremony, and there's a dance program drawing on Marni Tuwila, the Welcome Dance, Kaali the Boomerang Dance, Nantu and Tarnta the Kangaroo Dance, and Makanthi, the shake-a-leg show off dance. They've performed at WOMADelaide and at Adelaide Oval, so both a festival stage and a stadium are within range. Beyond performance, the group runs cultural awareness training, workshops and tours, which is the part organisations tend to book when they want people to come away understanding something rather than just having watched it.
