Kuma Kaaru

Kuma Kaaru takes its name from the Kaurna words for One Blood, and the group was formed in 2008 under the leadership of Jack Kanya Kudnuitya Buckskin. Working on Kaurna Yarta, the group connects land, spirit, sea and sky through traditional dance, storytelling and ceremony, including Welcome to Country speeches and Smoking Ceremonies. The dance programme takes in a welcome dance called Marni Tuwila, a boomerang dance called Kaali, a kangaroo dance known as Nantu or Tarnta, and the Makanthi shake-a-leg show. Past performances include WOMADelaide and Adelaide Oval, and the group also delivers cultural awareness training, workshops and tours.
