Merv Hughes

From Euroa, Victoria, Merv Hughes played district cricket for Footscray-Edgewater before a Test debut against India in 1985, going on to take 212 wickets across 53 Tests and a further 38 across 33 One Day Internationals through to 1994. His best figures of eight for 87 came against the West Indies at the WACA in 1988-89, a match that also brought a hat-trick spanning two innings and two days, and he took 31 wickets over the six Tests of the 1993 Ashes series. He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1994 and inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2021, and served as an Australian selector from 2005 to 2010. Merv also represented Victoria, Essex and the ACT, has co-hosted the cricket radio show Stumps on SEN, and released a fishing book, Caught in the Deep, drawing on years spent on the water with friends. As a speaker he mixes that cricket history with humour and anecdote.
