Rae is a singer-songwriter who resists easy definition, and the comparisons people reach for say a lot: Ani DiFranco, Ren, Missy Higgins, Amanda Palmer, Alanis Morissette. The music pulls together stripped-back folk, hip-hop influences, musical theatre and poetic lyricism, delivered with raw vocal expression. The performances are intimate and confronting in roughly equal measure. Not background music, and not meant to be.
