Salama

Maloya, the traditional percussion-based music of Reunion Island, sits at the centre of this cosmopolitan collective of Indian Ocean and other musicians. Salama took out the overall Music/Musicals prize at Fringe World Festival 2023, and builds its wider set from sega, seggae and songs drawn from Madagascar and Africa alongside the Maloya core. Traditional instruments or a more modern line-up are both on the table, and the band can scale its numbers up or down to suit an event. A signature 75-minute show, Salama Odyssey, adds a narrator and translated lyrics over a backdrop of visuals, walking an audience through the history behind the music. French-language performances, with or without a Creole inflection, round out what the group can deliver.
