Sandra Harben

A Whadjuk/Balardong Nyungar woman and Nyungar language speaker, Sandra Harben conducts Welcome to Country and smoking ceremonies for local, state, national and international events in Perth, drawing on language and stories tied to the specific place of the ceremony. An academic path runs from a UWA scholarship through study in Illinois to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research scholarship at Murdoch University, followed by a lecturing role there and, later, her own consultancy, Richmond Consultancy. Cross-cultural awareness training has been delivered for organisations including Legal Aid WA, and research work, including an Australian Research Council grant on Nyungar place names, feeds into cultural framework and training development in the housing sector.
