Kin connections to Badimia and Wongutha peoples sit alongside Simon Forrest's own Wadjuk Ballardong Nyoongar heritage. Early years as a trained teacher took in remote Aboriginal communities, rural towns and regional cities, before senior roles in Aboriginal education, curriculum and Indigenous affairs policy, and a career in the university sector from 1983 to retirement in 2019.
