The Bellhops

Based in Sydney

About this act

Jump blues, jive and swing, played by a big brassy line-up with its own horn section, the Brassholes. The Bellhops took Band of the Year at the 2003 Australian Blues Awards, and the album No Reservations was named Australian Blues Album of the Year that same year. An earlier record, Room Service, was runner up for the same award in 1999. Ian Dittman sings, John Russell plays slide and comping guitar, and Steve Lovarini and Mark Roulston hold the rhythm down. Dittman and Russell also write. Live sets lean on Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett and James Brown. They work Greater Sydney, Wollongong and the Illawarra, Newcastle and the Central Coast, Goulburn and the Southern Highlands, with the odd run to Byron Bay, Mudgee or the Victorian snowfields.
