The Rhythm Hunters is a traditional percussion ensemble from Central Coast, New South Wales.
Drumming drives The Rhythm Hunters, a Central Coast ensemble, but the group builds just as much around movement, stance and formation as sound. Original Australian compositions draw on Indonesian and Japanese percussive traditions with African and Latin influences also present, and the choreography traces back to Rendra’s background in martial arts, martial percussion, dance and Japanese taiko drumming. West Sumatran randai theatre feeds into the staging too, giving the visual side of the show equal billing with the rhythm. Roughly four fifths of each piece is written, the rest improvised, spanning song structure, vocal parts and physical movement together. Shows have run between Sydney and Newcastle.
